George Whalin passed away at his residence on Sunday, October 13, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was 83 years old. He was born on March 15, 1941, in Toledo, Iowa, to Burton and LaRoka Byerly Whalin.
George grew up on his family’s farm, where he enjoyed pheasant hunting and fishing. On June 19, 1965, he married Gail Jochims in Tama, Iowa. He then graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic as a chiropractor. They started their family and had a daughter, Renee Whalin, in 1966. In 1976, they moved to Mississippi, where he practiced as a chiropractor for thirty years. During his life, he enjoyed many hobbies, such as bowling, hunting, golfing, fishing, and woodworking. He was the statistic keeper for his daughter’s basketball team throughout high school. He was an avid Mississippi State fan and enjoyed traveling to Starkville to enjoy the games.
His first love was his family; he loved nothing more than being with them and enjoying time with them. He always had a smile, a joke, and the best sense of humor that made people smile.
He is preceded in death by his parents, LaRoka Whalin-Orr and Burton Whalin, stepfather Donald Orr, and Sisters Catherine Zmolek and Dorothy Vest (Jack).
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gail Whalin; his daughter, Renee Pugh; and his grandchildren, Lindsey Walker and Rex Broadhead (Shelly). He has three great-grandchildren, Madeline Tebo, Riley Tebo, and Dawson Walker. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.
His family would like to thank his caretakers, Simpson General Hospital, Gentiva Hospice, and his individual caregivers for their support throughout the last six months.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home, with interment following in Mendenhall Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Church of Mendenhall, P.O. Box 85, Mendenhall, MS 39114, https://www.thechurchofmendenhall.org.
Arrangements are entrusted to Tutor Funeral Home of Mendenhall.
