Simpson County Mississippi Scholars Banquet is scheduled for Monday, April 25, 2016, 6:00 pm at Magee First Baptist Church Family Life Center. This years speaker will be General Jeff Hammond from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Jeff Hammond is a Husband and Father, once a Soldier, and a graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). He received his commission as an Army Officer upon graduation in 1979 and during his years at USM was a member of the football team where he played quarterback, and served as a team captain.
Throughout his years in the Army, he led Soldiers and Families through numerous challenging circumstances. His service ultimately resulted in duty as the Commanding General, Multi-National Division Baghdad where he deployed Soldiers to Iraq for 15-month starting in December 2007. Over the years he deployed on four occasions, one involving enforcement of the Dayton Peace Accord (Bosnia). His staff experience includes the Army Director of Operations, Readiness and Mobilization and duty with the Pentagon Joint Staff.
He also provided command leadership for the Army’s two largest installations (Fort Hood and Bragg) caring for thousands of Soldiers and their Families, ensuring facility development, public relations/outreach, program marketing and financial management.
Jeff earned a BS and MeD while attending USM along with a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, which he received during his years on active duty with the Military. Throughout his military career he attended numerous schools to include The U.S. Army and Air Force Public Relation/Media courses, the Navy College of Command and Staff, and the Army War College.
Over the last three years, he has worked at The University of Southern Mississippi Athletics Department ultimately serving as Athletics Director. He is currently serving as Special Assistant to the President for Military & Veterans Student Affairs.
Jeff has been married to Diane (a USM Criminal Justice graduate) for 32-years and they have two children, Michael and Meagan (both Texas A&M Aggies).
