Gary Wayne Hamilton, 76, was born on August 14, 1949, in Peoria, Illinois, and was a man deeply loved by many, known for his kind heart, steady presence, and the way he made everyone feel like family. He passed away in his home on April 24, 2026, surrounded by his family.

He proudly served his country as a member of the 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles,” an elite air assault division of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Gary never met a stranger. Whether it was his church family at Goshen Baptist Church, where he attended every chance he got, his regular coffee runs at McDonald’s, or the many states he traveled to, he built connections everywhere he went. His McDonald’s family even knew exactly what time to expect him. He had a simple routine that reflected the consistency and warmth he brought into the lives of others.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Gail Hamilton; his two sons, Vance Hamilton (wife Felicia Hamilton) and Justin Hamilton (wife Jessica Hamilton); and his daughter, Jamie Hicks (husband Bryce Hicks). He also leaves behind 11 cherished grandchildren, who were a constant source of joy in his life. Gary is also survived by his older brother, Michael Hamilton (wife Louise Hamilton), along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Ellzey, as well as his mother, Lovetta Hamilton; father, Arthur Lee Hamilton; stepmother, Roseanne Hamilton, and sister, Janet Kaye Hyde.

Gary’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and genuine connection. He will be remembered for his easygoing nature, his dedication to his family, and the countless lives he touched simply by being himself.

The family will host a Celebration of Life Event on Gary’s 1st Heavenly Birthday, Friday, August 14, at 5 pm. The location will be provided in the coming weeks.
