As a Southerner,I am embarrassed to admit this…I really don’t like tomatoes! I rarely eat ketchup and I will pull the tomatoes off a burger. I would watch in envy as my coworkers would bring fresh tomatoes,Mayo, and bread to the lunch table! They would slather their bread with mayo, slices of juicy tomatoes, liberally salt and pepper this creation and just eat with such enthusiasm! But I just couldn’t share their love of fresh tomatoes until I had my first taste of a Fried Green Tomato!
Fannie Flagg epitomized this southern staple in her book and movie of the same name. I will still watch it every time it comes in TV!
Of course, any vegetable fried is yummy, but a fresh green tomato is tangy and so delicious!
So how to prepare this dish? There are so many varieties, but my favorite involves a black iron skillet, a mix of cornmeal and flour and spices.
This is my version, but I would love for my friends and readers to share their recipes or tips for preparing this Southern dish. I love to have input and suggestions as I am not “chef”, I am simply “Cooking from the Heart”!
