The First United Methodist Church of Magee will hold a celebration on Sunday, July 16, 2023 to celebrate a new beginning.

Chuck Cooper appeared before the Magee Board of Aldermen during their meeting on June 20, 2023, to request the board approve the closure of two streets on July 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., as well as to bring a fire truck and police vehicle to display that day.

He explained that the church has “disassociated from the United Methodist Church” and will be celebrating a new beginning and would like to invite the public to join them celebrate with the church’s members.

The two streets in question are 1st Avenue NW to 2nd St. NW and 2nd St. NW to 2nd Ave. NW.

Cooper said the closure of these two streets would allow people to park in the grassy area behind the church, as well as to walk safely to and from the church. He said the church’s safe sanctuary team would be activated to help attendees as well.

The board approved the requests.

Cooper said, “All are welcome. Come and celebrate with us.”

Glad to hear that Magee UMC disaffiliated. I was a member of the church when we lived in Magee 1961-1965. Have great memories fro living in Magee.
I have been in Lafayette, LA since 1965. Our church voted to disaffiliate and moving forward. Sad for losing some friends that stayed UMC. Totally respect their decisions and praying for both sides as all begin this new journey.
