The first bill of the 2025 Legislative Session has just been introduced, and it’s a bill to fully eliminate Mississippi’s income tax!

House Bill 1, authored by Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Trey Lamar, Speaker of the House Jason White, and House Ways and Means Vice Chairman Jody Steverson, would phase out the state’s income tax over ten years, returning over $1 billion to Mississippi taxpayers, according to an exclusive preview obtained by Magnolia Tribune.

Importantly, the bill would increase other revenue streams. For example, while the state sales tax would remain at 7%, municipalities and counties could add a 1.5% sales tax. This total of 8.5% would still be less than the total sales tax of neighboring states. The House proposal also would phase down the sales tax on groceries to 2.5%.

We are thrilled that the first bill of the legislative session prioritizes one of our key legislative priorities: eliminating Mississippi’s tax on work! We’ll provide additional analysis of this bill as the session proceeds, but don’t miss our next episode of The Empower Podcast, releasing on January 15, which will feature an in-depth conversation about this legislation with Chairman Trey Lamar.
