Simpson County School Board met Thursday, December 10, 2020, for their regular scheduled meeting.
Superintendent Greg Paes and Transportation Director, Jeffery Walker, advised the board that filling the need for bus drives that are either sick or quarantined due to COVID has become a major concern. Mendenhall and Magee had 5 bus drivers out and Simpson Central had one. If many more drivers are affected, lack of drivers could become a major problem for the SCSD. Superintendent Paes advised he would drive a bus if needed.
The board tabled discussions concerning facilities. President Danny Cowart advised a more in depth study needs to be conducted by The Bailey Group at no extra charge to the district. The board will await those decisions.
Superintendent Greg Paes and each board member expressed their congratulations to the Magee High School Football Team on winning the State Championship game. The board recognized several players from Magee that will play in the MS/AL All-Star game and two players, one from Magee and one from Mendenhall, that will play in the MS All-Star game.
The board also congratulation Mendenhall on advancing to South State in the playoffs.
The board approved the resignation of the Finance Director Duane Fewell effective December 31, 2020. Assistant Superintendent Debbie Davis submitted her retirement effective January 29, 2021.
The district was awarded additional time for all paperwork and equipment to be filed for the reimbursement of the Chromebooks from the CARES funds.
Good news was reported with the announcement that the district received around $28,000 in contingency funding for the construction for the new filed house at Magee High School.
The board entered into executive session to discuss student discipline.
