Six new human cases of West Nile virus infection in the past week have raised the state’s total for the year to 24, with one death. Peak season for WNV will continue through September. All Mississippians should be especially careful to protect themselves when outdoors.
• Use a recommended mosquito repellent that contains DEET whenever you are outdoors.
• Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
• Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
• Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
