At the Tuesday night, May 21, 2019, City of Magee Board of Aldermen meeting, Mayor Dale Berry discussed several apartment “eye sores” in the city.
Berry reported that Colonial Drive Apartments, Park Place (which is filthy according to Berry), Azalea and Hillside Apartments (have no manager) are a major concern to the city. These apartment complex have garbage pick up but do not pay a garbage fee.
Berry appointed a committee composed of Attorney Bruce Smith, Joe Worrell, and himself to study the problem and find a workable legal solution.
Curfew at the Walking Track & Tennis Courts
Mayor Berry discussed the problem in the walking track area and the area surrounding the tennis court. Often the lights are left on all night at these facilities. One of the complaints at the walking track is the noise level. Rather than setting a curfew, the board decided to have Chief Randy Crawford and the police department monitor the areas after 10:00 PM. If complaints are still received concerning the noise, the board will take stricter measures.. Timers are to be placed on the Tennis Court lights.
City Street Weight Limits
Weight limits on city streets were discussed. Mayor Berry pointed out that having seen what heavy trucks and equipment are doing to our city streets, the need for weight limits is a necessity. The Mayor will look into weight ordinances at other cities and report back to the board.
Parks and Recreation
Alderman Patrick Brown, Parks and Rec Director David Dunn, and Mayor Dale Berry met with the Simpson County School Board at the May 9, 2019 meeting. The city and county are trying to reach an agreement on the swap of the property in the Goodwater area known as Washington Park. The land is owned by the school but kept up by the city. Alderman Brown is anxious for the city to be in possession of the land. Plans are to build a basketball court and other items to enhance the area. The School Board has requested a proposal in writing of what the city will offer in exchange for the property. Until the proposal is presented to the School Board no action can be taken.
General Info
The minutes and claim docket were approved. Mayor Berry informed the board that the one large item on the claims docket was for a transmission for the garbage truck. Although there was a tremendous amount of rain fall in the last few weeks, Berry announced that the city had suffered no major problems.
Burger King
According to Berry, one of the two plans necessary to begin the Burger King have been approved. When all plans are approved and construction begins, Berry stated that according to Burger King we would have a whopper in ninety days!
Police Department News
Chief Randy Crawford asked for approval to transfer Dylan Brown from part time to full time. The measure was approved.
Matthew Hickman
Alderman Matthew Hickman discussed the overwhelming responsibilities of the Public Works Department. He suggested that a short list be made of things that need to be addressed weekly or bi-weekly in addition to regular duties. Hickman felt the accountability would enhance the management of areas in the city.
The meeting was adjourned into executive session.
