Elisabeth McCarty, 97, died peacefully in her home in Mobile, AL on Thursday, May 18, 2023, surrounded by her children James, Linda, and Avis.
Elisabeth was born on February 12, 1926, in Germany. In 1955, she met and married James “Mac,” who was stationed in Frankfurt. Their son, James Albert was born in Germany before “Mac,” who was transferred back to the USA in Ft. Benning, GA, where his sisters Linda and Avis were born.
In 1961, the family moved to Jackson, MS. Although unable to speak English, Elisabeth began waitressing at the Green Derby Restaurant. After leaving Jackson, the family moved to Roswell, NM, where Elisabeth continued to waitress until her dream came true of becoming an owner of her own restaurant until her husband’s health began to fail, resulting in a move back to Mississippi.
Elisabeth was known for her beautiful yard and flower gardens, where one could find her most days, weather permitting. Her baking skills were legendary and her cakes were sought by all who knew her for their delicious taste and appearance.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Anna Hoheisel, three brothers, sisters and her husband, Mac.
Elisabeth is survived by a son, James (Vonciel) of Brandon, MS; daughters, Linda (Joe) of Braxton, MS, Avis McCarty of Mobile, AL and a sister, Traudel Hibsch of Germany. She had eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at New Zion Baptist Church in Braxton, MS on June 3, 2023. Visitation begins at 1:00 pm followed by the 2:00 pm service with Bro. Jimmy Errington officiating.
The family wishes to thank Sadie for the kindness and care she showed our mother and Jessica for her gentle and loving care during mother’s last days.
Arrangements are entrusted with Tutor Funeral Home of Magee, MS.
