JACKSON, MISS. – Labor Day weekend signifies the end of summer, and families across Mississippi will be traveling to enjoy their well-deserved break. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) urges travelers to prioritize safe driving and make smart choices.

“With increased traffic on Labor Day weekend, driving smart is crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday for all Mississippians,” said Brad White, MDOT Executive Director. “Do your part by buckling up, obeying the speed limit and not driving distracted or impaired.”

To enjoy a safe and responsible holiday weekend, MDOT recommends the following tips:

  • Buckle up and make sure your passengers do as well.
  • Make sure children are in the proper car seat for their height and weight.
  • Never drink and drive. Designate a sober driver before consuming alcohol.
  • Avoid distractions like cell phones and food.
  • Allow plenty of time for travel and avoid speeding.

With highway traffic expected to increase, MDOT wants to provide maximum travel capacity and minimal construction delays. Crews and contractors will halt all non-emergent lane closures from Friday, August 30 to Monday, September 2. While most construction work will pause, motorists should be aware that some lane closures will remain in place to protect the traveling public. MDOT encourages motorists to treat them as an active work zone.

MDOT offers free travel resources – the MDOT Traffic mobile app and MDOTtraffic.com – to help make your holiday travel a breeze. The traffic app and website offer real-time updates on crashes, closures and construction. These travel resources also show the locations of rest areas and welcome centers in Mississippi.
