Dr. Clarence James (Jay) Kees III, a pioneering radiologist with a passion for “perfecting” the golf swing, died of natural causes on January 5, 2024 at the age of 85.

Jay Kees was born on June 8, 1938 to Mr. Clarence James (C.J.) Kees Jr. and Treva Horne Kees in Magee, Mississippi. He graduated from Magee High School and completed his undergraduate degree and premed studies at the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss, Jay was a member of the Kappi Sigma Fraternity and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. After attending medical school at the University of Mississippi, he completed his medical internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School. He furthered his education by specializing in nuclear medicine at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Jay then served two years as Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois.
Jay returned to Mississippi in 1970. He pioneered and taught many new radiological procedures at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Jay then worked in private radiological practice at Hinds General Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. He finished his medical career at Magee General Hospital in Magee, Mississippi and retired in 1997.
Scarlett Follin, Jay’s first granddaughter, summarized how much he will be missed. “I will miss you so much. Everyone does. You were the best grandfather a little girl could ask for. You were such an inspiration for me growing up and I hope one day I can be as smart and wise as you are. You truly were my inspiration to pursue healthcare and I know you’ll give me strength from above to push through. I will forever love you and miss you.”
He was preceded in death by Clarence James Kees, Jr. and Treva Horn Kees.
Survivors include his wife, Scarlett Rivers Kees of Pinola, MS; sons, Lesley Larkin Kees of Raleigh, North Carolina, Ashley Trenton Kees (Mary Beth) of Austin, TX and Jay Kirkley Kees of Pinola, MS; daughter, Simmie Scarlett Follin (Tim) of Canton, MS; grandchildren, Jacob Follin (Lenicha), Austin Kees, Scarlett Follin, Shepherd Kees and Stella Kees; sister, Sandra Lowman (Ronnie); and a host of nieces and nephews.
In Lieu of flowers, donations to your preferred medical charity would be greatly appreciated.
