On Friday, the Mississippi Community College Board announced the unanimous selection of Dr. Andrea Scott Mayfield as its new Executive Director. Dr. Mayfield is currently President of Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa and will be the fifth Executive Director of the agency. She will start on December 1.
Prior to serving as President at Shelton State, Dr. Mayfield worked for East Mississippi Community College from 1996 to 2014. During her 18 years at East Mississippi, she held the positions of Science Instructor, Distance Learning Coordinator, Academic Dean, District Director for Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Vice-President for Academic Instruction, and finally Vice-President for the Scooba Campus where she also oversaw issued related to the Office for Civil Rights, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Institutional Research and Effectiveness, and was the SACS Liaison for the college.
She received her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Livingston University, a master’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of West Alabama, and a doctorate in Community College Leadership from Mississippi State University.
“Dr. Mayfield brings a wealth of community college experience to the Mississippi Community College Board,” said Mr. Lee Bush, Chairman of the Mississippi Community College Board. “She has a strong background in all aspects of a community college campus, and just as importantly, she also understands the unique roles that our community colleges have in Mississippi. Whether it is academic courses, workforce training, career and technical education, high school equivalency, or any other programs our colleges offer, Dr. Mayfield will bring a campus perspective to our agency that will enable us to continue to offer the valuable services we provide to Mississippi. We are excited that she is coming back to the state and look forward to her leading the agency.”

The Mississippi Community College Board was established in 1986 as an independent agency that coordinates activities at the state’s fifteen public community colleges. The Board consists of ten members appointed by the Governor. Each year approximately 250,000 Mississippians are educated or trained at Mississippi’s community colleges.
