Douglas Chatham Herbert, Sr. passed away on July 25, 2018, at the age of 88. He was born on March 6, 1930, to parents Eula Mae Ricks and Sam Herbert. He was married to his late wife, Sybil Sanders Herbert, for sixty-five years.
Doug is survived by his children, Douglas, Jr. (Toni), Bill, Lisa Hilton (Cary), Mark (Darlene), and his nephew, Franz Sanders. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Chris Herbert, Elizabeth Herbert, Kathy Herbert Bull (Bill), Mollie Herbert Davis (Lane), Carie Hilton Liptrot (Adrian), Nathan Hilton, and grandnephew, Michael Sanders (Kerri). He leaves seven great-grandchildren: Morgan Bull, Anna Bull, Lindley Bull, Dixon Davis, Paxton Davis, Ivan Liptrot and Orion Liptrot. He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Herbert Moore (Rodney), and his brother, Dutch Herbert (Jeanette).
Doug was a member of the Mendenhall United Methodist Church, was active in local civic groups, and was an avid sports fan and fisherman. He attended Holmes and Sunflower Junior Colleges before earning his Bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University. He went on to earn several advanced degrees from The University of Southern Mississippi. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He devoted his life to quality education for students. He retired as Mendenhall Junior High School Principal in 1991 after decades in public education. He served as coach, teacher or principal at West, Columbia, Ruleville, Booneville, West Marion, and Mendenhall.
Visitation will be Friday, July 27, from 5:30-8:00 at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall. Funeral services will be at Mendenhall United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 28, at 3:00, with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Officiating will be Reverend Doctor Kurt Appel. Interment will be at Mendenhall City Cemetery following the service.
