Doris Cockrell, 82, of Mendenhall, Mississippi, passed away Tuesday, October 27,2020 at Simpson General Hospital in Mendenhall. She was born Thursday, October 27, 1938.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 31, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall. The Burial will follow in Mendenhall City Cemetery. Bro. Rodney Anderson will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall is in charge of arrangements. (601) 847-4401
Doris was born in Lena, MS on October 27, 1938. After graduating from Lena High School and Delta State University, she began her 30 year career as a high school English and Literature teacher, teaching at Puckett High School and Mendenhall High School. She later earned a master’s degree from William Carey. She was a long- time member of First Baptist Church Mendenhall where she taught Sunday school for many years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Billy DeWeese; second husband, Jim Cockrell; parents, Samuel “Bo” Brown, Jr. and Fannie Mae Brown and step-daughter Duell Cockrell Smith.
Survivors include her daughter, Amanda DeWeese Mangum (Van); Step-son Leman Cockrell (Marlene); six grandchildren, Tyler Mangum (Hannah), Logan Mangum (Miranda), Caroline Mangum, Lauren Cockrell, Carlee Cockrell, and Ashley Cockrell.; sisters, Marie Freeny of Hawesville, Kentucky and Louise Stoddart of Copper Canyon, Texas.
