emergency1emergencySeptember is National Preparedness Month.  Don’t wait until after a disaster to make a plan.  We should always have our homes and families prepared but what about our businesses?  Check out ready.gov  This website gives insight on how to protect your business by following these 5 steps:  Program Management, Planning, Implementation, Testing and Exercises, and Program Improvement.

As I was reading the articles on the ready.gov website, I thought do I have enough nonperishable food in the cabinets? What about a couple days supply of medicines?  Let’s not forget the batteries for our flashlights.  What about filling the extra gas cans?  Do you know how to get in touch with out of town family if a disaster comes to Magee and wipes out our internet and phone service?  What is your plan?

We all know the most common disasters like floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes.  Did you know there are other disasters that could effect our families and  businesses as well like: flu virus pandemic, acts of violence by people, acts of terrorism, technology related hazards like system, equipment, or software malfunctions?   Another disaster is earthquakes.  Yes, earthquakes are here around Mississippi.  With an earthquake just this weekend just East in Alabama but felt in nearby Scooba, Mississippi, we need to be on guard for this type disaster.    An earthquake also happened in Texas just last week and was felt over several states.  Are we prepared for an earthquake here in Mississippi, better yet, here in Simpson County?
