The crime occurred in Braxton in November 2015, while Simpson County Sheriff’s Deputies were investigating a possible burglary.

Judge Eddie Bowen accepted District Attorney Sullivan’s recommendation and sentenced Blackwell to twenty-five years to serve under the control of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Twenty years of Blackwell’s sentence shall be served in confinement and five years are to be served on supervised post release supervision. District Attorney Sullivan stated: “My office is committed to the safety and protection of law enforcement. Unlawful attacks against law enforcement officers shall not be tolerated. I am thankful to all law enforcement involved in this case. In regards to their specific heroism and outstanding courage under imminent threat of serious bodily injury, I especially salute the actions and conduct of deputies Jeff Smith, E.J. McCabe, and Josh Bryant. I sincerely request the people of Simpson County recognize, and tip-their-hats to these individuals who put themselves in harm’s way to protect you and enforce our laws.”
