Oh I remember well the days of term papers, book reports and searching the Dewey Decimal System cards at the Magee library.
My days at the library as a kid were not fun times for me until the day I discovered they had record albums you could listen to with headphones.
What was more intriguing was that you could check these albums out just like checking out a book.
Now most of the albums they had were not of my musical interest. They had Perry Como , Henry Mancini , Jim Nabors .
On one occasion to the library however , I found one that was a little more interesting. The album was “Sundown ” by Gordon Lightfoot.
I immediately pulled the album from its sleeve and placed it on the turntable there inside the library.
The songs coming out of those headphones were awesome “Sundown ” , Carefree Highway “, ” Circle Of Steel ” I loved them all.
I scurried to the checkout desk and signed the album out for the next two weeks.
Got the album home and my brother Steve loved it as well. He and I then took turns with it , I would check it out and when my time was up he would go in and sign it out .
I know each song on this album by heart and so did Steve. I never knew what happened to the library copy after they stopped carrying record albums but I should have bought it from them just for nostalgia.
The song “Sundown ” has since become one of Gordon Lightfoot’s signature songs. I heard it played on an episode of NBC’s “The Blacklist ” just the other night.
If you’ve never heard this album in it’s entirety, I would encourage you to do so . You’ll be glad you did!
