Dempsie Allen
April 30, 1930 – May 25, 2024
In the early morning hours of May 25, 2024; with his Granddaughter by his side; Dempsie Allen, 94, of Mt Olive, MS, went to be with the Lord. Dempsie was at home in Sandhill, MS; where he has lived with his Granddaughter and her family over the past three years.
Dempsie, a retired farmer, loved the outdoors. Whether it was just hearing the cows across the road, or feeling the gentle wind on his face; he was just happy to be outside. Dempsie enjoyed every minute of waking up his Great-Grandchildren in the wee hours of the morning singing Wabash Cannonball, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and Long Black Train. He enjoyed sitting on the porch with the family dog; that became his sidekick; and watching the hummingbirds. He could sit for hours and watch John Wayne on tv. He loved to go to the fish house. This became a joke over the past couple of years; because if the Grandchildren asked him if he wanted to go eat fish; he would “carry his walker” down the ramp and the sidewalk and beat everyone to the car. He was a big fan of chocolate and told his hospice aide that unless she brought him chocolate every day; he would refuse a bath. He and his aide became like family. He absolutely adored her and she thought the world of him. Five days prior to his passing, he and his Granddaughter planted seedlings together. He was looking forward to watching them grow.
Dempsie was born in Mt Olive, MS; on April 30, 1930 to Jake and Bertie (Rutland) Allen. He was a long time resident of Mt Olive. He farmed with Allen Farms up until he retired. Dempsie was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Mt Olive; and although he wasn’t able to attend for many years prior his passing; when asked about his relationship with Jesus; his answer was always “I’m ready and I know I’m going to Heaven”. We don’t have to wonder about where he is.
Dempsie was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Bertie Allen; his first wife, Alice McGuffee Allen, and his most recent wife, Ruth Ingram-Tew Allen; his bonus daughter, Linda Osley, his bonus sons, Billy Ray Reynolds, Bobby Carol Reynolds and J.B. Tew, his siblings; several Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and extended family members.
Dempsie leaves behind a daughter, Elaine McGuffee Woods (Joel) of Brandon, Ms; a son David McGuffee (Kathy) of Gulfport, Ms; a Daughter-n-law, Judy Tew of Mendenhall, Ms; Grandchildren, Laurie Pitalo (Danny) of Ocean Springs, Ms; Dodie Osley (Robert) of Tacoma, Wa; Margaret Reynolds Johnson (Kelly) of Camden, Ms; Bobby Carl Reynolds of Lavergne, Tn; Angie Tew Snellgrove (Eric) of Mendenhall, Ms; Terri Tew Phillips (Randy) of Sandhill, Ms; Michael Tew (Athena) of Richland, Ms; Jesse Reynolds of Austin, Tx,; Cley Reynolds of New Orleans, La; sister-n-law, Evelyn Allen of Mt Olive, Ms; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Dempsie requested several months ago that a rose garden be planted where he could see it from the porch. He wanted roses of every color imaginable. So, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that rose bushes be donated to be planted; or one can give a monetary donation to the rose garden project.
On behalf of the family; Thank You to everyone who has reached out to us, those who have called or visited, offered food, and those who have simply just prayed for us.
A huge Thank You to Haycion Hospice and the wonderful staff. The nurses and the Aide were absolutely phenomenal in helping to care for him. Your love, compassion and generosity will never be forgotten. We love each of you and appreciate the love and compassion shown towards him during his final days. Also, to Brother David Brewer and his family, words simply cannot express the love he carried for you. You made him feel loved and cared for when he lived alone and continued to visit and check on him even after he relocated. You truly are God sent and will never know how loved you made him feel.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service scheduled at a later date. Please continue praying for the family during this time and in the many days ahead. ❤️
