Guest on Immigration Bills: “Democrats Are Signaling That Our Border Is Open to Illegal Immigration”

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Guest has been a vocal critic of President Biden’s immigration policies, which have led to a surge in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) encounters with illegal immigrants at the southern border. Today, Guest criticized two pieces of Democratic legislation in the House that would exacerbate the problem on the border, H.R. 6 – American Dream and Promise Act and H.R. 1603 – Farm Workforce Modernization Act. Both pieces of legislation passed the House. Congressman Guest voted in opposition to both bills.

“During a pandemic and at a time we are seeing an immigration crisis unfold at our southern border, House Democrats are bringing up two immigration bills to provide amnesty, allow foreign workers to become eligible for U.S. citizenship, and make convicted criminals eligible to receive green cards,” Guest said. “It is evident that President Biden and the Democrats are signaling that our border is open. We cannot fix our immigration system while illegal immigration is encouraged through such poor policy, and we cannot fix the humanitarian crisis on our border when Democrats continue to refuse to admit it exists.”

Republicans offered an amendment to ensure gang members would not qualify for the benefits under H.R. 6. The amendment was rejected by Democrats.

Congressman Guest also criticized the Biden Administration for creating the crisis during a recent Committee on Homeland Security hearing where Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified, noting statistics and statements from Democratic colleagues. Guest also cited what he referred to as the “Pottery Barn rule,” which Guest defines as, “if you break it, you own it,” inferring President Biden’s executive orders to remove the Trump Administration’s border security measures have “broken” the American immigration system.

Congressman Michael Guest represents Mississippi’s Third Congressional District. Currently serving his second term, Congressman Guest is a member of the Committee on Homeland Security, the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and the Committee on Ethics.
