Biloxi, MS— The Secretary of State’s office and the Department of Marine Resources have coordinated a process for vendors to provide ferry services to Deer Island during the upcoming summer months.

The Secretary of State’s office and the Department of Marine Resources will conduct a workshop to provide education, topography, historical and ecological data to potential Deer Island transportation vendors.

Attendance and completion of this course will allow the vendor to receive a certificate of completion for transporting visitors to Deer Island.  The certificate of completion will be in effect until December 31, 2016.  Vendors who meet the program guidelines and complete the education course will be identified for transport of visitors to Deer Island.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at the Department of Marine Resources, 1141 Bayview Ave., Biloxi, MS 39530.  There is no cost to participate.  To sign up for the workshop, please notify Sherri Bevis, Assistant Secretary of State for External Marketing, at Sherri.Bevis@sos.ms.gov by Friday, April 29, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.

“We hope this program will provide an ideal opportunity for all Mississippians and people who visit Mississippi to gain access to and learn about Deer Island,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.  “We want to maintain this coastal preserve, promote ecotourism, and educate all people who visit the island.”
“Deer Island is one of South Mississippi’s natural treasures,” said Jamie M. Miller, Executive Director of the Department of Marine Resources. “It has a rich history, as well as opportunities for nature walks and birding. We want to give residents and visitors the opportunity to explore this unique coastal preserve.”
Additionally, the MDMR Coastal Preserves Bureau will implement an Interpretive Program for Deer Island during the summer months which will include a seasonal field guide to educate visitors about the Deer Island Coastal Preserve.  The Preserve guide will be available to host public tours at set intervals during the week.  Vendors are encouraged to coordinate with the Preserve guide for visitors to learn more about ecology, history and preservation efforts.
