Danger in the Park?

Danger comes in all forms…not always as a person.  I was called this week concerning the condition of the City Park play area.  Slides are broken.  Swings are broken.  Rough and dangerous “edges” are threatening to our children.  And of course trash…trash…trash!

Mayor Berry estimated the rebuilding of the park could exceed $200,00.  A Keep Magee Beautiful volunteer committee plus hundreds of other volunteers took on the challenge of creating a safe and educational area for the children in and around Magee several years ago.  Christian Carrico was instrumental in the building of the play ground and very much wants to see the area returned to its former glory.

During the fall while at the park, I encountered a family of 4 who had pulled off Highway 49 in search of a park for their children to play.  I was embarrassed by the condition of our park.

The Sound of Silence

Upgrading the park will take big money.  If anyone is a grant writer, please help us!

We don’t need to shake our head at the Mayor.  He is all for restoring the park…but with most things money is the issue.

Do you have any ideas on what can be done at the park and how we can achieve that goal?  Passing the buck will not work…this is something that affects almost everyone in our city.

The City Park is now under the Parks and Rec Department.  Jimmy Zilla, our new Parks director, hopes to see changes in all or our parks.  Hopefully, the trash situation will be addressed.

While on the city park subject, during tennis season, we have several  schools from all over the state who play at the park.  We need to be sure this area is clean.  Help us keep an eye on the park!

I am not sure how to take on or even start a park rebuilding.  Put it on your prayer list.

I have suggested  Pickleball courts be built near the Tennis Courts.  If you are not familiar with Pickleball, well, it is one of the most up and coming sports for all ages.  Loosely based on tennis and badminton, the game is not quite as hard on the body!  Pickleball is a great game for “mature” souls! My suggestion doesn’t really help the problem.

If you would be willing to participate in rebuilding the park, let me know!  I will pass your name to the appropriate person.

Enjoy the beautiful weather—-at the park?
