Dan Kimbrough, 83, passed away on November 6, 2023, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. A longtime resident of Florence, Dan was born on January 29, 1940, in Magee.

After graduating from Florence High School, Dan joined the United States Air Force, serving in South Korea. Following his military service, Dan earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University. He later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Mississippi College.  After working for Shell and Mississippi Power & Light, Dan spent over twenty years in federal government service as the Special District Representative for U.S. Representative G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery.

Dan was a longtime member of Richland First Baptist Church. He loved being part of his church community and supported many church projects and missions. Dan was also a member of the American Legion and advocate of veterans’ causes. In his retirement, he volunteered as a licensed National Park Service tour guide at Vicksburg National Military Park. He greatly enjoyed sharing his love of history and was an avid reader throughout his life.

An enthusiastic golfer and active sportsman, Dan always preferred to be outdoors. He traveled across the United States many times and was proud to have seen all fifty states. He loved to travel by car, and national parks and cultural sites were some of his favorite destinations. He and his daughter enjoyed many trips to national parks over the years, including two memorable trips to one of Dan’s favorite destinations, Glacier National Park. Dan was also a lifelong Mississippi State Bulldogs fan who often traveled to Starkville to attend football, basketball, and baseball games over the years. In his later years, he closely followed Mississippi State’s baseball team and was very proud to see them win the 2021 National Championship in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Kimbrough (Douglas Hill); his sister Kay Coffeen (Ed); his cousin Linda G. Warren (Bobby); and a host of family and friends. Dan’s lifelong friends Gene Ainsworth (Joy) and Carrie Ainsworth Smith are also part of his chosen family.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Richland First Baptist Church, 1102 Hwy. 49 South, Richland, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 10:00am and will be followed by the funeral service at 11:00am. Graveside services, including military honors, will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at New Bethlehem Community Cemetery. Dan will be laid to rest beside his mother, Modena Turner Phillips.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Richland First Baptist Church Deacons’ Fund, Mississippi State University (MSU Foundation), or the National Park Foundation.
