District Attorney Matt Sullivan and his Assistant District Attorneys Chris Hennis and Stephanie Wood successfully prosecuted Defendant, Travis Caffie, in a jury trial for shooting into a dwelling, shooting into a vehicle, and two counts of aggravated assault. The twelve-person Simpson County jury heard testimony and weighed evidence centered around gunshots that occurred in May 2015. The evidence proved that the Caffie fired multiple gunshots into vehicles and a home on Mary Grove Church Road striking bystanders, including an eighty-nine-year-old man. Investigators recovered shell casings and projectiles from a 9mm handgun and a AK-47 assault rifle. The motive for the shooting was a simple and petty dispute amongst several persons. District Attorney Sullivan noted that the prosecution’s case was aided in great part by Chris Hennis’ skillful questioning of multiple witnesses who testified they saw the shooting, and his methodical presentation of physical evidence to corroborate that testimony. The jury returned from their deliberations after 7 p.m. on March 29, 2017, and found the Caffie guilty of four separate felony crimes. Caffie is scheduled to be sentenced on May 8, 2017, at the courthouse in Mendenhall. Caffie faces a possible fifty-five-year sentence. District Attorney Matt Sullivan noted: “Without concerned citizens willing to serve on juries, the hard work of law enforcement and prosecutors would be for nothing. I was proud of Simpson County when I saw the large number of people who showed up to serve.”
