Sheriff Kenneth Lewis spoke at the July 6th Board of Supervisors meeting regarding inmates being held at the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Offices across the state have lost funding for holding inmates in county jails. Sheriff Lewis recommended keeping the inmates even though the county will no longer receive the $20 per inmate per day funding for holding the inmates. It should be noted however, that the county may receive a refund from the state in January if the county chooses to keep the inmates.

After this recommendation, it was brought to the board’s attention that the county is required to provide GED and drug and alcohol education programs for inmates, if they are to stay. While the county already offers a GED program, Sheriff Lewis expressed a concern about the county’s ability to afford a complete drug and alcohol education program. The board chose not to act on this matter at this time and has tabled the item for discussion at the upcoming July 16 meeting.
