Cougars Whip Copiah Move on to Playoffs

Simpson Academy claimed the 3 seed in the upcoming MAIS playoffs with a 41-7 victory over Copiah Academy  Friday night, October 27th. The Colonels received the opening kickoff and fumbled on their own 48 yard line. Simpson took advantage of the turnover capped off by an Ethan Flynt 1 yard run, the PAT by Hooks Harvey was good and with 5:47 left in the first quarter Simpson led 7-0. Simpson added a score with 11:04 left in the half to take the lead to 14-0 on a Dylan Hallman 36 yard run and a Hooks Harvey PAT. After the Cougars intercepted a Colonel pass, they scored on a Dylan Hallman 4 yard run, the PAT by Hooks Harvey was good and with 9:11 left in the half the Cougars led 21-0. Simpson closed out the half when Bryce Caughman scored on a 16 yard run with :21 seconds left in the half, Hooks Harvey tacked on the PAT and the Cougars led 28-0 at halftime. Simpson received the second half kickoff and drove 80 yards culminated by an Ethan Flynt to Huner Cline 5 yard touchdown pass, the PAT was no good and with 7:48 left in the third quarter Simpson stretched the lead to 34-0. The Colonels fumbled on their next possession, and the Cougars capitalized on the turnover when Michael Winstead took it in from 8 yards out, Hooks Harvey’s PAT was good and with 3:15 left in the third quarter Simpson led 41-0. Copiah got on the scoreboard with 10:48 left in the game on a 60 yard run by Ladarius Stovall, Carson Flumm added the PAT making the final score SImpson 41 Copiah 7. The win improved Simpson’s record to 7-4 on the season and 3-1 in district play.
Leading the Cougars offensively in the rushing game were Dylan Hallman 13 carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns, Cook Weathersby 11 carries for 70 yards, Caleb Garner 4 carries for 31 yards, Michael Winstead 4 carries for 28 yards and a touchdown and Ethan Flynt 5 carries for 26 yards and a touchdown. In the passing game, Bryce Caughman 1 catch for 30 yards and Hunter Cline had 1 reception for 5 yards and a touchdown. Ethan Flynt completed 2 passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. The Cougars were led defensively by Corbin Hosey in on 10 tackles, Caleb Garner in on 6 tackles, and Cook Weathersby in on 4 tackles. Corbin Hosey, Caleb Garner, Daniel Pepper, and Noah Magee all had sacks. Corbin Hosey had 2 tackles for loss. Daniel Pepper, Caleb Garner, Noah Magee, Cole Weeks, and Austin Creel had a tackle for loss for the Cougars. The Cougars forced three turnovers Hunter Cline an interception, Noah Magee and CJ Jones with fumble recoveries. In team stats Simpson had 347 yards of total offense, 312 yards rushing, 35 yards passing, and picked up 22 first downs. Lamar had 108 yards of total offense, 109 yards rushing, -1 yards passing, and picked up 2 first downs.

 

The Cougars will host East Rankin Academy in the quarterfinals of the MAIS AAAA DII playoffs this Friday with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. This is the 24th time that the Patriots and Cougars have faced each other with Simpson leading the series 20-3 and have won 12 in a row in the series. Simpson won earlier this season by a score of 49-20. The winner of this game will play Pillow Academy in Greenwood next Friday night.
