The City of Magee cemetery committee had a vision for change and improvements.  With the cooperation and support of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, the committee has made a difference.

Mayor Berry appointed Sue Honea as the alderman to head the committee.  Members are :  Tawesia Meador, Jason Ratcliffe, Ricky Anderson, and Joy Harris.

Tawesia Meador accepted the challenge to over see the updating of areas in the cemetery.

The fence has been painted and new letters affixed.  The streets in  the cemetery have been named. The area a grave is located can be found by sections.  (Plans in the future are to map the cemetery with the help of Central MS Planning District).

Cameras have been installed.

The committee meets every 6 weeks to remove dead flowers and pick up limbs.

A contracted lawn service cuts the cemetery.

Joe Worrell oversaw the installation of a flag pole.

Tim Bray and the city crew have continued to assist with situation at the cemetery such as gravel in the lower turn around.

The committee is not finished!  We hope to eventually provide another entrance and exit to the cemetery in the back area.  Plans to landscape the area around the gates is in the works.  Cleaning around the pine trees as you come in the gate is another item on the list.

Donations to the cemetery are accepted.  Make your gift to the City of Magee/Cemetery Fund.  (We have actually had a couple of people make nice donations which allowed the committee to complete another item on their list!)

The committee appreciates the support of the City in this endeavor.

Sue note:

As with any project, help is always needed.  We don’t need your criticism.  We need your help.  We welcome volunteers.  Also, if you see a problem at the cemetery, let us know or take care of the problem.

How much of our tax dollars were spent on these projects and has every cent been approved by the board of aldermen for which you serve on? I do mean every cent!!! Let be clear, approved prior to the money being spent????

Have all of the expenditures on this cemetery project been approved by the entire board of aldermen and I mean prior to any work being done? Criticism is crucial when some things maybe being done not in compliance of the law!!! Rather it was intentional or out of ignorance!!

I received a private email from Ms Honea stating she would be glad to sit down and discuss this matter. I decline because my question is public and the answers should be also. If I am asking for something that isn’t there then I will apologize and move on. Until will be waiting for what I asked for.

Expenditures under $5,000 in the state of MS don’t have to be pre approved by board prior to spending as long as they are properly appropriated in the current year budget.

As far as board approval, the board is required by state law to approve any claim submitted to the for payment within 45 days for receiving the claim.

      Proper chain is as follows:

      1. Board approves budget
      2. Department head schedules work for no more than 5,000
      3. Contractor completes the work
      4. Contractor submits claim for payment
      5. Board approves payment through the claims docket
      6. City clerk prepares the check for payment.

Now this is a different process if amount goes over 5,000 to any one vendor.

This is something I think we already know. I’m glad you brought that to light!! However it doesn’t answer my questions. I suggest you go back and read my questions. One expenditure is the cost of the fence???? How much did all of it cost? Don’t misunderstand me, the cemetery needed the care your group has provided and Tim Bray but my curiosity remains high on its cost and was it properly spent and met all requirements by law. It is apparent that there other issues that need attention in the whole town and not just 2 sections but these issues I will raise in the future.
