Congressman Michael Guest Applauds Trump Administration’s Announcement of $1.8 Billion in Grants to Combat Opioid Crisis

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) applauded the Trump administration’s announcement of $7.6 million in funding to combat the opioid crisis in Mississippi. The funds are part of $1.8 billion dollars in grants announced by President Donald Trump and Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar.

“The opioid crisis is a great challenge, but it is one we are committed to overcoming as a nation,” Guest said. “Medical professionals, support groups, churches, and families are on the front lines of the battle against addiction. These funds are critical in supporting state and local prevention and treatment offerings to those who have been impacted by this epidemic. As we continue to prioritize this issue from a federal perspective, I encourage parents, teachers, and community leaders to share information about the devastating impact that drug abuse can have on our Mississippi communities.”

“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership and the hard work of so many Americans in local communities, we are beginning to win the battle against the opioid overdose crisis,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “Our country is seeing first drop in overdose deaths in more than two decades, more Americans are getting treatment for addiction, and lives are being saved. At the same time, we are still far from declaring victory. We will continue executing on the Department’s 5-Point strategy for combating the opioid crisis, and laying the foundation for a healthcare system where every American can access the mental healthcare they need.”
