Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie came before the Mayor and City Board Tuesday night, June 1, 2021, to report on the condition of the SASE apartments which are located on Dry Creek Road.
Mayor Berry and the board asked Valadie to inspect the apartments which are in horrendous condition.
Mr. Valadie stated, “ they (the apartments) are appalling.” Valadie sighted numerous hazards. The unsecured apartments have wild life living in the complex. Water erosion could cause electrical problems in several areas. No vent covers on dryer discharge is a potential hazard. Over grown vegetation is growing into electrical power supply. Vacant and unsecured apartments allows for crime and pest issues. Plywood is covering windows and doors of several apartments.
Senator Sampson Jackson, owner of the apartments, appeared before the Board explaining that he has already begun clean up work on the property. Senator Jackson is from Dekalb, MS and Representative for the 32nd District.
Alderman Whitney Baker suggested the Fire Marshal continue to visit the property to report on progress. The Board informed Senator Jackson the area will be checked in 30 days and all work must be completed in 90 days.
Senator Jackson agreed to the request and plans to have everything in order by 90 days.
Alderman Lane Steele emphasized to Senator Jackson the importance of acting in a timely manner. “These people need a place to live,” stated Steele.
