“The opening of the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum represents a seminal event in the bicentennial of our beloved state.

“These two institutions give Mississippians and visitors from around the world a setting for learning about the people and experiences that make up our collective story.

“I believe understanding Mississippi’s past is indispensable to help us create a better future for new generations.  The rich parade of our state’s history has a tendency to prompt study and reflection, mourning and celebration.  Interpreting all aspects of our heritage, the good and the bad, is essential to continuing to improve our state.

“I commend everyone who has worked toward the opening of these state-of-the-art museums.  The people of Mississippi should be proud of them today and well into the future.”

Cochran and Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, co-authored a 2013 column, “Two museums commemorate shared history,” to promote the significance of the museums and Mississippi’s importance to American history and culture.
