WESSON– Copiah-Lincoln Community College has announced the hiring of Kendra Jenkins Washington as the college’s new color guard director and music instructor. Washington earned her bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University where she majored in instrumental music education with her primary instrument being alto saxophone. She participated in the world-famous Sounds of Dyno-Mite Marching Band, where she served as a student conductor, arranger, and one of the few female drum major’s in the band’s history. She also participated in the symphonic band, jazz band, and concert choir. Washington was honored as Who’s Who among American College and University Students. She was a member of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Washington graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Mississippi with a master’s degree in music. She was a member of the Women’s Glee Chorus, African Drum and Dance Ensemble, and concert band. Washington was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award for Ethnomusicology, and was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda Honorary Music Fraternity.

For the past four years, Washington has served as director of bands for McComb School District, where she served as the director of the marching band, concert band, jazz band, sixth grade beginning band, and chorus. She has previously worked as the band director for Morgantown Middle School and assistant band director for Natchez High School. She has presented workshops for the Mississippi Bandmasters Association, and Alcorn State University’s Summer Band Director’s Clinics. In addition, she teaches voice, piano, and instrumental lessons at Downtown Music Academy in Brookhaven.

She is a member of the Southwest Mississippi Bandmasters Association, the Magnolia Band Director’s Association, the Mississippi Bandmasters’ Association, the Mississippi Association of Educators, and the National Association of Educators.

Washington resides in Brookhaven with her husband Marcus and two sons.
