Four hearings concerning clean up were held Tuesday night at the September 19, 2023 Board of Aldermen Meeting.
Deputy Fire Marshal/Property Maintenance Shane Steele brought four properties before the board concerning condition of the properties.
Property located at 826 4th Street SE, which is owned by Brandy and Gumercindo Santos, was first on the agenda. The Santos family did not attend the hearing. The Board voted to proceed with clean up of the property. The owner will be charged for the clean up by placing a tax lean in the amount of the clean up fee.
Property located at 406 12th Street NE owned by Cleveland Norwood was next on the list. Mr Norwood was present for the meeting and expressed his desire to clean the property. The Board allowed Norwood 30 days to clean the area. At the October 17, 2023 meeting, if property has not been cleaned, the city will clean the property and change fee back to Norwood’s tax record.
Property located at 302 2nd Avenue NE (near Magee High School football field) owned by Bennett Tax Co. INC did not appear at the hearing. The Board voted to proceed with clean up of the property and placing a lean on the property.
Property located at 725 1st Street SW owned by Roy and Paul Arnold was next on the agenda. Paul Arnold appeared before the board expressing his feelings that the City is picking and choosing which locations are chosen for clean up. Mr. Arnold is to meet with Shane Steele establishing exactly what needs to be cleaned at the location. The Board granted Mr. Arnold 30 days to complete the project.
The agenda and claims docket were approved.
All aldermen were present for the meeting. Mayor Dale Berry was not in attendance due to health reasons. Alderman Patrick Brown, Mayor Pro Tem, conducted the meeting.
Brett Duncan of Prince CPA reminded everyone the 2023-2024 budget is completed and will be published in the Magee Courier in the next few weeks. The budget will also be posted on MageeNews.com.
Police Chief Shane Little asked the Board’s approval of moving Felicia Hamilton from part time dispatcher to full time dispatcher. The Board approved the request.
Patrick Brown, on the request of one of his constituent, asked to close the street in front of the old Magee Elementary school (McLaurin Drive) on Saturday, October 29, 2023 from 5-7. The request was approved.
Alderman Brown gave a report on the condition of the Library. The outside facer board is to be replaced with a metal beam/board matching the color of the library doors. Air conditioning problems are being addressed.
Penny Aguirre, Zoning director, updated the board on progress of the Preservation Committee. Members of the committee are: Jean Allen, Joy Harris, Gaye Sullivan, Clara Jaynes, Earnest Jaynes, Dr. Anika Floyd, Tiffany Kinslow, chairperson, Allyson Allen Burch, Vice chair, Samuel Kinslow, and Penny Aguirre
The Commission has been formed and is meeting monthly now at Co-Lin. Currently, the committee has 2 major restoration projects which they are working on and seeking funding: The Magee Community House and the Magee Consolidated McLaurin Vocational Attendance Center.
Penny presented a special event application from Healing Hands of Earth Shop on Main Street on Sunday, November 12th from 11-Am to 4 PM. No street closures are required since Main Street businesses will be closed on Sundays. The event is “Holiday Sip & Shop.” The Board approved the request.
Shane Steele updated on activity at the Airport. The jet A fuel is still not available due to a part not received. Bids are being taken for the roof at the airport.
Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie reported on area wildfires. The majority of the fires are in the county which Magee Fire Department covers along with other county fire departments. As far as wild fires in the city, there have been very few. “ Sometimes, the men are fighting two and three fires a day,” shared Valadie. Valadie reminded the public we are still under a Burn Ban.
Parks and Rec Director Jimmy Zilla reported a 32 team tournament will be played at the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex this weekend (22 & 23). The following weekend (29 & 30) the city will host the MAIS Softball Tournament with 42 teams participating. The tournament will continue through Monday.
Forrest Dungan of Clearpoint Consulting Engineers updated the board on the water projects as well as an issue on Kennedy Drive
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned to Executive session to discuss a legal and personal matter.
