According to Chuck Akers the name Cinco de Mayo is actually founded in the sinking of the Titanic.  In 1912 mayonnaise was just becoming popular in Mexico.  The United States would not share their mayonnaise with any other county in the world.  The Mexican government cut a deal with England to buy 85 tons of mayonnaise to be shipped in the cargo hole of the Titanic.  As everyone knows, the Titanic sunk April 15, 1912 with an estimated 1500 people lost and all  cargo.  The water was too deep for any salvage.  In 1912, we did not have social media and news did not travel as it does today.  It was May 5, 1912 that the news of the Titanic sinking made it to Mexico.  The news was such a shock to the Mexicans they decided to make May 5 a National Holiday…the “sinking of the mayo”…
