Charter School Authorizer Board Selected to Participate in National Collaboratives
JACSKON, Miss. – The Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board (MCSAB) today
announced that board staff has been selected to participate in two distinct programs offered by prominent national charter leader and educational research organizations.
After completing The National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) Leaders
program, Executive Director, Dr. Lisa Karmacharya was selected to participate in the newly
formed Leadership in Action Program where she is engaging with a select group of leading
authorizers to develop a set of resources and examples to provide guidance for the field in
implementing a new school application that will lead to more diverse school models. The goal of the program is designed to: (1) Build a learning community of authorizers who are rethinking the new school application, (2) Support authorizers in implementing and testing NACSA’s recommendations for the new school application, and (3) in developing best practices and lessons learned to share with the broader authorizing community.
Building on its national research portfolio, WestEd will support a small select group of
authorizers participating in the Indicators of Distress Collaborative. Participants will work to
identify struggling schools prior to comprehensive decline, identify sector-wide challenges
facing charter schools in their portfolio, and identify the available and needed supports for
schools to address their needs. As a member, MCSAB will benefit from peer-to-peer
networking, content and capacity expert advice, and access to the latest research to inform
sector improvement.
“It’s an honor to have been selected to participate in these two programs. With our commitment to continuous improvement and the success of charter schools, engagement with national leaders to discover what works will strengthen our policy and practice.”
Dr. Lisa Karmacharya, Executive Director
“This is an exciting opportunity for Mississippi that aligns with our priorities to measure the
quality of charter schools through outcomes-based accountability and to ensure Board
operation is effective and transparent.” Jean Cook, Board Chair
