The May 15, 2024 Simpson County Board of Supervisors meeting was called to order by President Mitchell Chatman followed by prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. All supervisors were in attendance.
Tim Gray, Chancery Clerk, brought two items before the Board:
Mrs. Mara Polk, Mississippi Regional Library, presented information on the growth and continued success of the libraries in Simpson County. 63,993 in total collections; 45,264 library visitors; 21,074 registered library card users; and 52,443 total circulation. Mrs. Polk highlighted the improvements to the Harrisville Library. “In Mendenhall and Magee, mobile printing has really increased,” stated Mara. “Simpson County loves to use their library,” explained Mara.
Ben Warren, Road Manager, named James Eubanks as a new hire. (Board approved) The Rock and Tar program kicks off Monday, May 20, 2024. Warren expressed the need to “upgrade before everything falls apart.”
Mr. Willie Brown of 118 Norman Road Magee appeared before the board to discuss a problem he is having with his neighbor concerning debris piling near roadway impairing right of way. A letter will be sent to Mr. Brown’s neighbor giving him 15 days to clean up the area.
Tax Assessor Jamie Brewer presented the April surrender tag list. She always gave each supervisor a solid waste credit list. Mrs. Brewer will be attending a conference July 13-17.
Sheriff Paul Mullins asked for Janiya Mackey from dispatch full time non certified ($13.75 per hour) moved to full time certified at $14.40 hour. Sheriff Mullins explained the problems with getting police vehicles which are under state contract. “No one wants to deal with state contract,” said Mullins. Sheriff Mullins’ present budget allows for the purchase of 3 vehicles. $75,000 is the cap on bid law.
John Kilpatrick reported 1402 911 calls from April 15th to present. The county had 7 structure fires. Two of the fires required assistance from the Red Cross.
Eric Bowen reported for Charlie Welch who was not in attendance. Eric explained the Courthouse roof is still leaking. Sheriff Mullins stated,” we ain’t leaking…we are flooding.” The Board voted to ask George Owens to check the roof and advise on what he uncovers.
Attorney Danny Welch discussed the continued problem of dead trees and the liability created.
Phi Air Ambulance informed the board the company will be requesting an additional $1,900 per month bringing the new total to $2,900 and with a 2% monthly increase. The Board will take the matter under advisement.
The meeting was adjourned to Executive Session.
