A called school board meeting will be held Thursday night, April 30th beginning at 6 PM at the County office building.

One of the items on the agenda is a report from the engineers and architects concerning locating the new elementary Magee school in the same area as the middle and high school. A great amount of interest has been  shown by area residents to locate the school “in town.” Before a decision for location of the school is reached, the board asked that the area in town be evaluated as to a possible site.

My understanding is that the results from the Coach Jim Nowell case  will not be announced at this meeting but at the regular May meeting. I don’t quite understand that because I thought the board had to make a decision in 30 days which would be April 30th.

The elementary school needs to be build in an area where the schools can expand by adding more parking spaces or by building more classrooms buildings and where the kids have room to play without having being to close to other school buildings. . I love to see all the schools in the same location but that is not practical nor would it work without having to close two or three streets by making them one way. Parking is already a problem now and by adding the elementary school their will compound the problem. There is not enough room to build the elementary school next to the high school and middle campus because the campus is already too cramped now. Where will the kids play at? When I was in school we did not parking like there is today but some of buildings which where built in the 1950’s and before that will have to be replaced. The school board says everybody supports building the in the central business district and the people on the board of alderman and the mayor wants to see the schools in the downtown area. The new elementary campus will not see a increase in attendance because the schools will still be in the downtown area. If the county wants to see an increase in attendance they need to support building the new elementary school outside of the central business district(downtown). If Magee wants to see an increase in public school attendance than Magee needs to stop allowing for apartment complexes to be built for any reason. This will help the city increase the tax base. The schools do not need to be built on land that is in a flood zone.

more attend. I think the best place to build the new school campus is the 16th hall. Some people think we should consolidate schools and build a new high school campus but they do not say we will have to build a new band hall, football field, a new gymnasium, a new auditorium and a new baseball field an

What is the total budget for this project? How much has been spent so far out of those funds on evaluating possible sites and how much more is projected to be spent before a decision is made? How will a two story building be made accessible for those with disabilities and how much will this cost? How will traffic in that area be handled? How will a two story building be safer on the event of fire or natural disaster? Where will playgrounds, cafeteria , etc be built? What will keep the children out of the streets and others out of the school? Just curious.
