Simpson County Board of Supervisors met Monday, June 7, 2021 for their regular scheduled meeting.

May minutes and the Road Manager’s monthly report were approved.

Buddy Wolverton, County Engineer, reported the status of State-Aid & LSSBP Projects as of May 31, 2021.

  • Annual Maintenance Inspection of completed State Aid Projects
    • June 22 – 23, 2021
  • SAP-64(16)M – Surface Maintenance on Cato Road is at 27.41% completed. The Contractor has completed the base repairs and leveling. Project will be resealed this year.
  • SAP-64(19)S – Surface Maintenance on Mt. Zion to Shivers Road and St. Johns Road is at 36.72% completed. The contractor has completed base repairs and leveling. Project will be resealed this spring.
  • LSBP-64(23) – Bridge replacement on Sofa Road has issued notice to proceed by May 17, 2021.
  • SAP-64(64) – Grade, drain, base and surface for Star to Braxton Road is at the stage of working on assembly of P.S. & E to be mailed. Utility agreements have been mailed. The acquiring right of way can begin.
  • LSBP-64(24) – Bridge Replacement Shorter Road – P.S.&E. Plans were mailed to State Aid on May 24, 2021.

The board approved for Jamie Brewer, Tax Collector, to attend the MACA Conference to be held July 11-15, 2021 in Oxford, MS.

The board approved for Whitt Fortenberry to replenish the Jury fund account with $15,000. $5,000 for the grand jury September 2021 Court term and $10,000 for the petit Jury 2021 court term.

The board approved a request from Tommy Joe Harvey, Chancery Clerk, appointing Mallory Yelverton to fill unexpired term of Brian Barnard who resigned from the Economic Development District. Permission was granted to Mr. Harvey to attend the Chancery Clerk’s convention July 13-16, 2021 at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Biloxi, MS.

Sheriff Paul Mullins presented the following for approval:

  • Hire Jason Runnels as a deputy full time certified.
  • Hire Ronnie Brown in the jail part-time non-certified.
  • Move Anthony Simmons in the jail from part-time to full-time.
  • Hire Brandi Hanna as dispatch part-time certified.

The following travel was approved in the Sheriff’s office.

  • The board approved Dispatchers Lauren Welch and Minda Smith to attend active shooter & Workplace Violence Class June 21-22 at the E911 building Mendenhall at a cost of $300.00 each.
  • Dispatcher Lauren Welch to attend Suicide Intervention Class at the Jackson Communications Center June 11, 2021 at at cost of $150.00.

The board approved payment of the summit Food service invoices for the month of May 2021 at a cost of $16,621.14.

The board approved the rental agreement with RJ Young for the Cannon Copiers at the Sheriff’s office.

The board approved the request for the Sheriff’s department to apply for the Bullet Proof Vest Partnership Grant.

The Supervisors were advised a notice from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security advised the WIN Job center in Mendenhall will be closed effective July 1, 2021. Citizens needing services may visit nearby WIN Job Centers in Jackson, Pearl or Brookhaven and my access services online or by telephone.

Future Board Meeting:

  • Monday, June 14, 2021 – Recessed Meeting
  • Tuesday, July 6, 20021 – Regular Meeting
  • Thursday, July 15, 2021 – Recessed Meeting

Holidays: 

  • Independence Day – July 5, 2021

With no further business meeting was recessed until meeting Monday, June 14, 2021.
