Magee Board of Alderman met Wednesday for their regular scheduled meeting. Board meeting was called to order and entered into recess until Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
Thursday, July 6, 2023 the meeting was called to order. First order of business was to acknowledge and honor the passing of Alderman Matthew Hickman, Ward 2. A special prayer was conducted. A black bow draped the chair of former Alderman Hickman and a bouquet of flowers sat on the counter in front of his chair.
The board declared the position of Ward 2 vacant and a special election will be held Tuesday, August 15th. If no candidate receives a majority of votes a runoff election will be held September 5, 2023. Candidates must acquire 50 signatures to qualify. Forms can be obtained at City Hall. Publication of the special election will run in the media for 3 weeks prior to election.
The board approved a resolution for special events that will be voted on at the next board meeting.
A concerned was mentioned during the approving of the claims docket with the mowing timelines on the highway. The mayor will look at the request. There seems to be more cutting presented. The crew is only allowed 18 cutting per year. They are close to exceeding the allotted number of times allowed to cut.
The Fourth of July firework show was cancelled due to weather on Independence night. The fire work display has been rescheduled for Friday, July 14th at the sports complex staring at 9:00 p.m.
The board approved to purchase a new Kubota for the parks and recreation department. R & M Tractor was the low bid of $11,900 in comparison to Circle C for $12,400. The board approved the low bid. The last tournament at the sports complex brought nearly 3500 visitors to the City of Magee. The park was full.
The Magee girls 6 and 10 year olds will be playing in the state tournament in Brandon, MS Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (July 13-15). The games will take place in Shilo park in Brandon. Opening ceremonies are Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Brandon Amphitheater Theater.
Starting at the end of July through November 19th, the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex will be full for 17 straight weeks with tournaments.
Chief Police Shane Little stated there was an incident Tuesday, July 4th when an individual fired shots into the air during the gathering. The police are working the incident and charges could be coming regarding the incident.
The board approved to hire Shane Fewell as a full-time police officer to replace the resignation of Matt Sullivan who has taken a job with the Capital Police in Jackson.
Chief Little advised the board 2 business had been broken into (Piggly Wiggly and tire store). The police were able to determine the break-ins to be an acts of a juvenile. The juvenile were quested and admitted to the wrong doing. The juvenile responsible has been turn over to the judicial system.
The meeting entered executive session to discuss personnel performance of en employee.
Next meeting is schedule for Tuesday, July 18, 2023.
