The Simpson County School Board met Thursday, February 11, 2021, for their regularly scheduled meeting.

The board approved a brochure that was developed to be distributed to the Superintendent candidates. The board approved a timeline of events for the hiring of a new Superintendent for the district. The advertisement for the position should start in the coming weeks and run for 4 weeks.

Brittney Mosley with the Mississippi Department of Health joined the meeting via Zoom to discuss school health assessments.

Michael Marks with Students Against Vaping joined Zoom to discuss the problems and issues with students vaping within the schools. Superintendent Greg Paes advised the board vaping is a concern and is happening within our schools. In high school, one out of four students vape. In middle school, one out of ten students vape. Mr. Paes is going to gather more information on the subject and present to the board steps that can be taken to address the issue.

James Smith, a concerned parent, came before the board to ask for help for a baseball field for high school boys to play on. He said the conditions of the Mendenhall city fields, which the school uses, are in horrendous condition and embarrassing for any visitors to see. The school is not allowed to do any modifications or improvements to the field due to the fact the property belongs to the City of Mendenhall and not the school. The City of Mendenhall refuses to make any improvements.

The governor has not cleared educators to receive the vaccine at this time. As soon as the Governor allows educators to receive the vaccine, the district will work to get all educators vaccinated.

In sixteen section business, South Mississippi Timber was the best bid for 65-acre track timber bids sales at a price of $3,027 an acre. Bids were opened Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at 2 p.m. The board approved the bid.

Brett Duncan with Charles Prince CPA Firm met with the board to discuss reconciliation of the bank accounts. The firm is not finished at this time but will have the 2019 accounts ready for auditors in the coming days. All account information is being coded and added to accounting system on the computers.

The board approved for Magee High School to have a prom at Blueberry Peace Farms in Magee.

The board approved board policies K, L, and M with a few minor changes at the Board Attorney’s request.

The board approved to pay SHOTS Computers $292,087 for invoices from the Emergency declaration on October 2, 2020, to purchase Chromebooks and Hotspots with CARES Money.
The board approved letters of retirement from Jamie Jones and Brad Smith.

·      Romonica Feazell

·      Dr. Paul Lawrence

·      Terrell Luckey

·      Dr. Geroge Huffman

With no further business, the board entered executive session to discuss student discipline.
