The Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, December 7, 2021, for their regular scheduled meeting.
Asphalt bids were received and opened. The board approved to accept the bid of Walters Construction in the amount of $272,680 as the cheapest and best bid.
Mayor Berry advised the Christmas Parade was a success. Berry did make public the city was cited by their Insurance Company for candy being thrown during the parade.
Beauty for Ashes requested to rent the vacant building/shop located by the wood yard for $200.00 per month. The board agreed to the request and would be rented as is agreement.
The City of Magee will be closed the following dates for the holidays.
- Friday, December 24, 2021
- Monday, December 27, 2021
- Friday, December 31, 2021
- Monday, January 17, 2022
The garbage schedule will alter during the holidays the dates are listed below.
- No Garbage collection as listed dates above that City Hall is closed
- December 27 garbage will be picked on December 28, 2021.
- December 28, 2021 garbage will be picked up on December 29, 2021.
- December 30, 2021 regular route.
- January 3, 2022 through January 7, 2022 regular route.
Coach Earnest Jaynes met before the board to explain the plans for the old elementary school site. An Historical site and Museum are being planned to develop. This would be a non-profit organization. Board Attorney Bruce Smith advised some obstacles would have to be researched first before moving forward. The building was deeded to the city by the Simpson County School District to be used as a school. Also, the building and land is rented to the 5 County Child development. Their contract would have to be researched.
Ricky Anderson a representative of the cemetery committee met to update the board on improvements that have been made at the cemetery. Anderson advised limbs have been trimmed, debris removed, and overall cemetery has received a facelift. Anderson advised the board research had been done and the $100 plots the city charges are way too cheap in comparison to surround cemeteries. Some location charge $400, $500 and $550. The board approved to change the price to $400.00 for plots going forward. Plots may be purchased at City Hall. (See Libby Hegwood)
Ashley Steel Airport Manager advised the fuel pumps are back up and running. A bad relay located on the Jet A fuel tank continues to be a problem.
The board approved to have a workshop Monday, December 13, 2021, at 5:00 p.m.
Fire Marshall Charlie Valadie reported the fire department responded to 11 fire calls for the month of November.
The board approved Charles Welborn to attend the police academy at a charge of $3600.00 to become certified. Upon completion of the training, the state will reimburse the city for the cost.
The board voted to reduce the speed limit on 11th Avenue to 25 MPH effective immediately.
The board entered executive session.
