The April 5, 2022 City of Magee Board of Aldermen meeting was called to order by Mayor Dale Berry. Alderman Ward 4, Patrick Brown, led the opening prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Magee citizen James Reece appeared before the board with questions concerning trucks parking in city neighborhoods.
Upcoming April events were discussed.
A workshop for the Mayor and Board will be held Monday, April 11, 2022 beginning at 5 o’clock in the Court Room.
Resolution supporting the Fair Housing Act which was passed in 1968 was board approved.
The minutes and claim docket was approved.
Policeman Ben Stephens came before the board with a follow up report on cameras for 19 areas in the city. Ben has an extensive background working with cameras and computers. The Board had asked Stephens to research the best system for the city. Ben reported the Fusus Core system proved to be the best solution to the needs of our city. If approved, the city will purchase the system which allows area businesses to tap into the system for coverage of their businesses as well as city wide coverage. The cost of the system including all cameras and several cell sites is $53,950. Alderman Brown stated we would need to consider this proposal following our work shop and “look at the money.”
Two bids were received for a dump truck which gives either a purchase or lease option. Trustmark’s bid was 3.36%. PriorityOne’s bid was 3.13%. The board accepted the lowest bid which was PriorityOne Bank.
Demetrius Hodge was hired for Parks and Rec at a beginning salary of $11 per hour.
Keffer, with the airport, reported no problems exist with the fuel. Bids will open April 28, 2022 for the Apron project (an area that needs paving).
Shane Steele reported the house on 4th Avenue SW has been torn completely down and debris removed. Shane continues to send letters to area home owners as well as working with upkeep property and old junk cars.
Police Chief Allen Martin brought the following for employment: Mikale Damper was hired for part time dispatcher. William Russell Vaughn was hired for full time employment with the police department. Vaughn is a certified police officer. Joseph J. McNair was hired for full time police officer.McNair has worked part time for the city in the past.
Tim Bray reported for Public Works the desire to hire Jermey Sandifer who has completed the diesel technology program at a salary of $11 per hour. The board approved the hire.
Two ladies came before the board to express their desire to see a school bond issue passed if presented again. The ladies spoke from experience on working in the school the need for improved buildings. Both ladies are in support of consolidation.
Alderman Sue Honea gave a report for Austin Brown, the IT specialist for the city). Brown is completing a new website for the city of Magee as well as updating City of Magee Facebook page. The Board of Aldermen and Department heads have been updated on the site. City ordinances will be added when received from City Hall. All announcements are being reworked. Honea explained that Austin cannot migrate the new site to the old site until the contract with CivicPlus is approved and signed. The library will have a link on the news site. Departments are encouraged to inform Brown of upcoming events.
Brown explained some type of workshop or training will need to take place in order to learn how to operate the system.
Sue Honea stated “our site will only be as good as the content. Brown was not hired to supply content but to managed the IT part of the site. We as board members and department heads must supply needed information to Brown.”
