Annie Levonia “Lea” Baggett Hawkins Harthcock, 96, died at her home on January 20, 2021 with her family at her side. She was known by her family and friends as Mom, Momma, Meemaw, Aunt Boney or Lea.
Lea was born on October 29, 1924 in Buckatunna, Mississippi to the late William Calvin Monroe Baggett and Ethel Roberta Wood Baggett. The daughter of a United Methodist minister, the family moved every two to four years. Lea made friends wherever they lived. She graduated in the class of 1943 from Monticello MS High School and from Perkington Jr. College with a degree in home economics. She spent twelve years as an interior decorator for Sears Roebuck where she achieved the Million Dollar Sales Club most of those years. Lea later had a twenty-year career with Bell South/AT&T before she retired. She instilled in her children an appreciation for the beauty of nature and the arts by teaching them about birds, gardening and music. Lea’s granddaughters will forever remember their grandmother for the gift she gave them by teaching them how to set a table properly.
Lea is survived by her children and their spouses, Joseph Benjamin and Sandy Hawkins of Florida, Dorothy Ann and John McElroy of Charlotte, Pamela Suzanne and Wally Waters of MS, and John Douglas and Karen Hawkins of NJ, Marty, Melinda, Precia, Andy, and Jamie Harthcock; 23 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by two husbands, five sisters and two brothers.
Due to COVID, a graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Beezer Cemetery in Raleigh, Mississippi.
