Alton Kenneth (Ken) Sykes was born 9-15-1932, in Crystal Springs, MS to J.D. and Irene Sykes.

He Graduated in 1952, from Forest Hill High School in Jackson,MS. He attended Millsaps College and graduated from Mississippi College in 1955, where he met the love of his life Marie Elizabeth (Betty) Day. They married on November 26,1955, and shared 66 years together.

Betty and Ken had 2 children, Jamie and Melinda. The family eventually made their home in Simpson County after living in Jackson, Brookhaven and Clinton.

Ken retired from Yellow Freight Trucking Company. He spent his retirement buying and repairing cars, doodling his many mathematical equations and learning to play blackjack.

Betty and Ken were blessed with 3 granddaughters, Lauren and Kristen Sykes and Devin Hart. Ken was always proud of his “girls” and encouraged their accomplishments. The family spent many vacations together and enjoyed “Poppy’s stories”and learning to dance the waltz and the jitterbug.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years Marie Elizabeth “Betty” Sykes; Son, Jamie Sykes (Sharon) of Brandon, Melinda Hart (Ted) of Mendenhall, Three Grandchildren, Lauren Sykes-Newman (Eric) of Brandon, Kristen Sykes of Brandon and Devin Hart of Chatom AL.

A private family graveside service will be Saturday, April 8th, 2023 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Brookhaven, MS.

Arrangements are entrusted with Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.
