Alan Gwin Moore, 74 of Florence, MS passed away Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Covington County Hospital in Collins, MS.

Alan, a proud native of Taylorsville, MS, leaves behind a legacy marked by unwavering determination and perseverance. Born on Saturday, February 11th, 1950, in Taylorsville, he spent his formative years in Summerland, MS where he attended Taylorsville High School and excelled in various sports, most notably football. Alan’s love for sports motivated him to continue his athletic journey at Jones Junior College, where he made a name for himself as the team’s kicker.

In 1968, Alan’s life took a significant turn when he enlisted in the army and fearlessly served in the infantry during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, Alan explored roles in the oil industry and long-haul truck driving before eventually starting his own underground utilities contracting company. He continued his work in utility contracting and other various trades until his retirement in 2009.

Even in retirement, Alan’s thirst for achievement was unquenchable. In 2010, he made the bold decision to reignite his college football aspirations, which had been put on hold during his service in Vietnam decades earlier. He enrolled at Holmes Community College in Goodman, MS and once again took to the field as a kicker, where he embodied and lived by the motto “BELIEVE”. His belief in himself and his athletic abilities paid off; the following year he was welcomed by Faulkner University in Montgomery, AL where he ultimately achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the oldest player to score a point in NAIA college football at the age of 61 in 2011.  This accomplishment placed him on the permanent team roster at the College Football Hall of Fame.

Known for his relentless pursuit of dreams and ideas, Alan was a true go-getter who poured his heart and soul into every endeavor, never backing down from a challenge and always extending a helping hand to those in need. His life philosophy revolved around living to the fullest on his own terms, regardless of the outcome, fighting for what he believed was right, and above all, believing in oneself and others against all odds.

As we honor Alan’s memory, let his legacy of courage and his mantra of “BELIEVE” inspire us to face life’s challenges with determination and perseverance, just as he did throughout his life.

Alan is preceded in death by his daughter, Annashi Wyatt; parents, Robert and Agnes Moore; brothers, Bobby Moore and Jerry Pat Moore. Survivors include his wife, Janice Byrd; daughters, Brandi Welch (Trae) of Florence, MS and Chelsea Ellison (Cliff) of Homestead, Florida; grandchildren, Taylor Pinson (Gage), Owen Welch, Ava Welch, Ashleigh Wyatt, Cody Wyatt, and Austin Ellison; brother, Lynn Moore (Diane) of Fulton, MS; aunt, Willa Dean Edwards; and son-in-law, Jay Wyatt.

‍The service to honor Alan’s life will be held on Saturday, April 6th, 2024. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 am and the Memorial Service at 11:00am at Summerland Baptist Church located at 80 SCR 28-4, Taylorsville, MS 39168. ‍ His final resting place will be Summerland Baptist Church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, we kindly request that memorial donations be made to the PTSD Foundation of America in memory of Alan G. Moore.  The PTSD Foundation of America serves to provide hope and healing for the unseen wounds of war.  Thank you for considering this meaningful way to honor Alan’s memory.
