Each year more than 3,500 babies in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly while sleeping. In an effort to reduce the risk of all sleep related infant deaths the American Academy of Pediatrics has just released the NEW UPDATED AAP SAFE SLEEP POLICY.

The new recommendations and the full article which has clear and simple guidance on how and where to put infants to sleep can be found at this link:

The updated safe sleep policy statement includes the importance of skin-to-skin care for newborn infants, emphasizes infants sleep in their own crib and to not share a bed with anyone, and they have added to the recommendations already in place on what is needed for a Safe Sleep environment.
It is very important that these guidelines be shared and awareness raised on how to have a Safe Sleep environment. These recommendations will help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), or accidental deaths from suffocation or strangulation.

Mississippi has a very high Infant Mortality rate and this message is vital in helping keep these precious infants safe while they sleep. We can make a difference!

The Mississippi SIDS & Infant Safety Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to provided SIDS/SUID and Safe Sleep environment information and education to the families, the general public and professionals, as well as supporting research. The Mississippi SIDS & Infant Safety Alliance also provides bereavement services to families who have suffered the devastation of the loss of a precious baby.

For more information on SIDS/SUID and Safe Sleep environments or if you are a parent and need support or need to talk, please contact Cathy Files at 601-957-7437 or visit our website at www.ms-sids.org.
