In Loving Memory of Dale Berry
A Man Who Loved Magee
If I had to name the people who truly loved Magee, Dale Berry would be near the top of the list.
I’ve known Dale and Hal their entire lives. I knew their parents, Ed and Theda, and watched Dale grow up—playing football, coaching, and always mentoring young people.
As a former Mayor, Dale had the privilege of serving our citizens. He genuinely wanted everyone to be happy. Regardless of race or background, Dale loved people. I had the honor of serving alongside him on the Board of Aldermen and saw firsthand how deeply he cared for others.
Dale was a businessman with a sharp mathematical mind—he could run numbers in his head with ease. He was a coach who loved his players and wanted the best for them, and a teacher who made learning fun. He was a visionary, always dreaming of a better future for Magee.
But more than any of that, what stands out most to me is how good he was to my boys—Dickey, Larkin, and Breck. They didn’t always have it easy, and Dale, along with Hal, stepped in—not just with their time, but with their love. When someone loves your children like that, you never forget.
Dale adored his family. His daughters meant the world to him, and his son BB—well, BB was the light of Dale’s life. His grandchildren brought him much joy. He constantly guided, supported, and loved them all deeply.
He was also deeply committed to our church, First Baptist Church of Magee. He took part in mission projects, was faithful in attendance, and loved his Sunday School class and teacher, Brother Max. Honestly, I can’t think of anyone Dale didn’t love.
There’s no filling Dale’s shoes. He walked his own path—but never walked it alone.
I will miss my friend.
