Simpson County Supervisors met Monday, December 7, 2020 for their regular scheduled meeting.

John Kilpatrick, EMS, met before the board and discussed changes to permit prices for towers. The board approved to raise the cost of permits for communication towers to $5000.00. The board approved increasing the coast of a 911 address to $100.00 and permits for individuals building in a flood zone to $250.00.

Due to lack of participation and not having a quorum several times, the board approve to abolish the current 911 board and let the supervisors become the governing board for the 911. Killpatrick will report all needs directly to the Board of Supervisors.

Due to an increase number in COVID cases and the need to keep 911 employees healthy and safe as possible with the high priority need of each employee to keep the county operating, the board discussed the need to close the 911 office to the public. Anyone including employees entering 911 building will be required to wear a mask. The conference room will be closed for public use at this time. Only the county will be allowed to use conference room at this time.

Sheriff Paul Mullins was grated permission to hire Amanda Bynum and Miranda Langston as part-time non-certified dispatchers for the Sheriff’s office.

County Engineer Buddy Wolverton gave a report on the status of State-Aid and LSBP Projects.

SAP-64-(Surface Maintenance) Cato Road

  • 27.41 % Complete
  • 15.00% Elapsed time
  • Contractor has completed base repair. Will reseal next year.

SAP-64(19)S -(Surface Maintenance) Mt. Zion to Shivers Road and St. Johns Road

  • 36.72 % Complete
  • 21.82 % Elapsed time
  • Contractor has completed base repairs and leveling. Will reseal next year.

LSBP-64(23) – Bridge Replacement) Sofa Road

  • Working on P.S. & E. assembly. No utilities at site.
  • Can start acquiring right of way.

SAP-64(64) – (Grade, Drain, Base, & Surface) Star- Braxton Road

  • Working on P.S. & E. assembly. Have mailed out utility agreements.
  • Can start acquiring right of way.

The board approved publication of the 2019 audit report. Certificate of Attendance was included in the minutes and approved by the board for the 2020 MS Justice Court Judges training courses conducted by MS Judicial College which Ted Blakeney and Charles Savell attended.

The board approved moving forward to no longer cover the cost of culverts for the citizens. The public will be in charge of paying for culverts and the county will install and provided dirt.

Wendell James was appointed as Special Prosecutor in the Case of State of Mississippi vs, Shelley Dear due to the recusal of County Prosecutor Wesley Broadhead.

No further business meeting was adjourned.
