West Nile Virus
Four new West Nile virus cases in the state have been confirmed in the past week alone, bringing Mississippi’s total of human WNV cases for the year to 25.
Peak West Nile season typically lasts through September, but infections can occur throughout the year. To stay protected in October and beyond, be aware of areas where mosquitoes are more likely to be found, including moist, shaded or overgrown areas of your yard. Clearing overgrown grass and bushes and eliminating areas of standing water around your home can help reduce the mosquito population and keep you safer from infection.
Zika Virus
Zika virus infection remains a risk to Mississippians who travel to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central or South America. New travel-related cases of Zika have raised the total to 23 in the state this year.
Because of the danger of birth defects that can be severe or fatal for a developing baby, pregnant women should not travel to countries or areas where Zika is being actively transmitted. All travelers to these destinations should take precautions before and after travel to prevent the infection of themselves and others. Our website has details on precautions to take, and locations where Zika is currently being transmitted.
