Smith County School District Earns B Rating
SMITH COUNTY, Miss. — October 15, 2026 — The Mississippi Department of Education has released accountability ratings for the 2025–2026 school year. The Smith County School District earned an overall B rating.
“I am proud of the work that our students and staff put in last year. We obviously have a lot more work to do, but I believe that we are on the right track,” said Superintendent John King.
This year’s ratings use a more rigorous standard, as required by state law. The higher thresholds mean that some districts and schools received a lower letter grade even when student proficiency rates improved.
Statewide, 82.4% of school districts and 79.7% of schools received a C or better. The new standards also mean that this year’s ratings cannot be directly compared with ratings from previous years.
For example, if an A required a score of 90% in one year and 95% in another, a student who scored 94% would earn an A in the first year and a B in the second—even though the student’s performance was the same. The change in rating reflects a different grading scale.
