2026 INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIOD
Jackson, Miss.-
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is gearing up for another major holiday travel initiative of the summer season, coinciding with the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. This travel period will kick off at midnight on Friday, July 3rd, and will continue through midnight on Sunday, July 5th. During this period, troopers will be deployed across the state to engage in high-visibility patrols and establish strategic checkpoints aimed at deterring impaired and unsafe driving behaviors. These efforts will be particularly focused on enhancing road safety, with a strong emphasis on promoting the proper use of seat belts and child restraint systems. “This weekend, we celebrate the freedom and courage that have defined our nation for 250 years. As we gather with family and friends, we’re reminded of the selfless service and sacrifice of those who answered the call,” said Commissioner Sean Tindell. “Thank you to the brave men and women of our military and to the law enforcement officers who serve and protect our communities each day. Your dedication makes the freedoms we celebrate possible. Happy Independence Day, and happy 250th birthday, America!” During the 2025 Independence Day Holiday Travel Period, MHP investigated 90 crashes with one fatality and made 74 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems. MHP also issued 577 citations for occupant restraint violations during that enforcement period.
